Scarlet Quince Cross Stitch | Norman Rockwell | New Stitching App!!
I received the emailed newsletter from Scarlet Quince, but I don’t always examine it as closely as I should. Imagine my surprise this morning when I discovered two newer developments from them that I’d be missing!!! Let’s dig in!!
New Normal Rockwell Cross Stitch Adaptations
Scarlet Quince has started adding some very beloved Norman Rockwell paintings to their cross stitch catalog. I know what you’re thinking – copyright! In response to a question they received on their Facebook page, Meredith from Scarlet Quince responded:
We had a recent question on Facebook about whether our Rockwell patterns were licensed since there are so many pirated patterns out there. So, just so you know, we do always license the art we use that is under copyright, and if we can’t get a license, we don’t use the art. Which has led to some major disappointments for me as well as some of you. But the copyright holder always has the right to decide who can use the art, and that’s our policy. (Sometimes it’s a little hard to know if a piece is in the public domain or not, but we do our best. And you don’t have to worry about that — if you’d like to suggest an artwork, please go ahead, and we’ll figure out if we need a license or not.)

For those that have been watching my YouTube channel for a while know that I had purchased a non-copyrighted Normal Rockwell a few years ago that I badly wanted to stitch. Unfortunately, because the piece wasn’t copyrighted, the picture from which the pattern was developed wasn’t as high-resolution as it should have been.
This caused the pattern to not look good at all once I started to stitch and I eventually had to give up the project despite many, many hours of work. It was a Thanksgiving cover from the late 1920’s, I believe. I’m not going to recommend that painting to Scarlet Quince to try and get the cross stitch pattern copyright. I have enough to do right now.
However – here’s the great thing about Scarlet Quince (there’s actually a lot of great things, this is just one):
If you are the first person to suggest a picture/painting/project and Scarlet Quince is able to get the copyright and turn it into a proper pattern, they will send you a free copy of it!!
Next up – the App!
Scarlet Quince Develops Their Own Stitching App
Pattern Keeper introduced many folks to the concept of using a phone/tablet app to keep and mark their cross stitch patterns. If you haven’t seen this yet, it’s only for Android as of now.
For folks that have Iphones/IOS, the alternative is to purchase an android-based tablet so that they can use the app that way.
However, Scarlet Quince has developed their own stitching app that works on just about every platform you can imagine! IOS/Android – yes! But wait – you didn’t get a PDF, you got a physical pattern. Don’t worried because you are covered!
Here’s the breakdown of how to get it:
- Check out the App page here for all the info
- The User Manual is here
- You will need a code to register for the app, and the email that you purchased patterns under. Did you buy a pattern from another cross stitch site or maybe Amazon? Email Scarlet Quince and they will help you out and get your set up!
- You will not be downloading the app – so you can’t find it on an app store on your phone. It runs via a web app, so you need an internet connection and a browser in order to use it.
- You also need to be consistent in using that same browser/device for your patterns. The patterns are downloaded into that particular web app, so if you want to stitch on your phone and your tablet that won’t work. Your progress won’t be saved and shared cross-device.
- You will need to make sure you have the latest editions of any browser (especially for IOS versions) before you start using the app.
- Creating this kind of program is hard!!! Look at how long it is taking Pattern Keeper to expand the companies that they work with. This is a work in progress with Scarlet Quince. If you run into an issue working with the app, let them know so they can work on it!! Don’t get mad at them – their goal is a great experience for their customers.
- This will improve in the future. It looks like their goal would be to create a standalone app that can be downloaded. For now, backup your info when you can and read their user manual thoroughly!
With Scarlet Quince creating their own app, the hope is that 2020 and beyond will see the emergence of more and more cross stitch pattern designers/distributors will have the ability to have their patterns on a stitching app. Using a stitching app definitely speeds up progress and reduces mistakes made in stitching so this would be great news for everyone!
